I have been doing summer camp shows for over 20 years. In that time, I’ve done things wrong a few things, and I’ve done things right a lot of times. Basically, I learned what to do and what not to do. I’m going to give you some tips for choosing the right kind of entertainment for your Summer Camp.
- See if the entertainer fits within your themes for summer. This is key. If they don’t fit within one of your themes, then why are you bringing them in?
- You want entertainers to enhance your existing curriculum. This is the same as #1, but people often forget it.
- Be sure they know how to entertain ‘kid only’ audiences. There are a lot of people who say they are entertainers but have no clue how to perform for kids.
- Check to see if they have a different show for the younger ages. What works for 8 year olds might not work so well for 3 or 4 year olds.
- If you have a favorite performer, check in advance what themed shows they offer and use that as a guide for your summer activities. Sort of the reverse of #1. You’re still making the theme fit though.
- Check to see if they carry insurance. Lots of performers out there do not have liability insurance. You want to go with a professional who has it.
- Check references. One great way is to call other daycare centers and ask if they’ve used this person. You’ll find out really fast if they have a great reputation or if they don’t.
- Does the entertainer offer different ways of accepting payment? Do they take credit cards for example?
- How much room do they require to present the show?
- Are there any hidden fees, like travel fees? Some performers charge travel fees, add on credit card transaction fees. You need to check in advance.
